:: program methodology ::

Proper medical / psychiatric / psychological assessment will be the key to successful intervention and will be done by highly experienced personnel. Special attention will be given to co-morbid (underlying psychiatric / social and emotional conditions) which is often the primary source of the problem whilst the addiction is the patient's effort to do self-medicate as a quick fix for the underlying problem.

:: duration of treatment ::

Those patients in need of detoxification are admitted to Vredendal Hospital, after which the treating doctor decides when the patient can continue to the next step. The Psychological treatment program is followed for the minimum duration of four weeks, but could be extended to as long as three months, depending on the progress made.

:: approach ::

Holistic Approach

The patient in need of treatment will realize (either himself, his loved ones, employer- when in ill health or personal crisis-) that the pain he suffers becomes too much. The pain has a source from the past, and has escalated over time, is currently affecting his life and the pain will continue in the future.

This constitutes a personal crisis and the person realizes that something else needs to be done and that denying the problem is no longer an option.

We cannot change our past histories or personalities, but we can change our thoughts and behaviours in the here and now.

Certain disempowering beliefs and behaviour needs to be interrupted and stopped. New results cannot be achieved by continuing with the existing beliefs-system.

The problem lies therein that our brain associates more pain in doing things differently, resulting in a relapse to the old dysfunctional, but habitual pattern results.

The old dysfunctional behaviour did fulfill a specific need and therefore the person will need support in identifying more rational empowering, positive and effective ways to deal with the underlying need.

The problem with most rehab programmes is that the old pattern is not substituted by a more effective way of dealing with the underlying problem.

This is where the individualised treatment programme and group session need to facilitate the new empowering belief-system, based on mental health principles resulting in a newly orientated person.

Mental health principles compromise of many elements and a few examples are self-acceptance, self image, conflict anger management, assertiveness, communication skills, analytical thinking, problem-solving behavior, decision making, time management, personal vision, responsibility and commitment, overcoming childhood trauma, forgiveness, career planning etc.

:: change process ::

Our approach is based on the 6 steps of permanent behavioural change (Tony Robbins).

What do you really want in life (vision) and what prevents you from getting it?

Associate MASSIVE PAIN to your old pattern and associate MASSIVE PLEASURE to achieve your vision.

Stop the dysfunctional pattern.

Identify and develop an alternative functional pattern.

Practice and improve the newly identified alternative functional pattern so that it becomes habitual.

Ensure that the change is a permanent one by asking the following questions:

  • Did I associate enough pain to the old pattern?
  • Will I in a situation where the old pattern was triggered in the past, follow the new pattern, or will I fall back into the old pattern?
  • Do I celebrate my victories and experience pleasure with the small incremental daily positive changes that I make in my life?
  • Although the old pattern was dysfunctional, there were certain reasons why I did it and benefits that I got from that. Do I experience the same benefits by using the alternative pattern?
  • Am I sure that this is a permanent change and that I still can’t believe there was a time when my brain had associated pleasure with the old dysfunctional system?
